“It’s not the destination that counts, it’s the journey”, they said.
“Well than let’s jump on the weirdest means of transportation we can find and make it a memorable one”, I replied.
And before I knew it I was sitting in what was supposed to be a bus, nearly folded in 2, getting a headache from the blue lights accentuating the shiny all-blue interior, while some Thai guy was doing karaoke as if his life depended on it…
And that wasn't even the best part of the trip!
We came from Khao Yai national park, another slightly off the beaten path destination that definitely deserves a visit for its amazing views and wildlife. I’ll write about it later, I promise! We first had to take a bus to Nakhon Ratchasima, a 2 hours' drive from Pak Chong, the nearest town to Khao Yai park. We dropped off our luggage and got back outside to look for a tuk tuk to take us to the bus stop. From there it was another 2 hours to Phimai.
Totally unsuspecting we stood on the side of the road, when suddenly this guy arrived. You're thinking once you've seen a tuk tuk, you've seen 'em all? Guess again! It turned out to be the most hilarious tuk tuk ride ever... Did someone say partyyyyy!?!?
Phimai historical park
Phimai is amazing. It's like walking inside a miniature Angkor Wat, but without the crowds. In Phimai they actually say that Angkor Wat was built after the example of Phimai, but obviously no one talked about that in Angkor ;) Nevertheless the city was an important city in the Khmer Empire and impressed me, even though I'd already been to Angkor.
I'll let the pictures do the talking from here. Check out the bottom of this post for practical information and than go get your but on that karaoke tuk tuk to Phimai!

Practical information
Phimai historical park is open daily from 7.30 am to 6 pm. Entrance is 100 Baht. Busses leave from bus terminal 2 in Nakhon Ratchasima every 30 minutes between 6 am and 7 pm. It takes about 1,5 hours and costs 50 Baht.
